Finbarr Filan, older brother of the Westlife singer Shane, has confirmed he will be the general election candidate for Renua Ireland in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency, which includes West Cavan and South Donegal.
The 47-year-old manufacturing engineer was Shane’s partner in their property business, Shafin Developments, which scooped up six sites around Sligo and Leitrim between 2003 and 2006.
After the company went bust Shane Filan from Westlife was declared bankrupt, and Finbarr said they both still owe huge amounts to the banks.
Finbarr, who is Chairman of the Sligo Business Improvement District, joined Renua because he said it is pro-business and his family have been in retail in Sligo for around 50 years. Mr Filan stated, “I believe I have the character, personality, ability and life experience to win a seat for Renua in Sligo-Leitrim.”
There is no date set for the next general election yet, but it must be held before Easter next year.
