Leitrim County Council are working with developers, receivers and other stakeholders to facilitate the completion of unfinished housing developments around the county.
The Department of Environment said one in ten unfinished housing estates identified nationally last year have been completed or made safe in the past 12 months.
According to the Department, three housing estates have been taken in charge by Leitrim County Council and 56 remain incomplete.
A spokesperson for the council told the paper, “Leitrim County Council continue to work with Developers, Receivers and other stakeholders to agree site resolution plans and facilitate the completion of unfinished developments within the County.”
“With regard to the Public Safety Initiative, Leitrim County Council have carried out public safety works on eight unfinished estates within County Leitrim. Works have also commenced on an additional two estates. These works are designed to address identified issues of public safety.
“The completion of unfinished developments remains a matter for the developer and other relevant stakeholders.”
The departments’ figures show that 19 enforcement notices have been issued in Leitrim, 6 public safety initiatives have taken place and 31 developer/ funder resolutions (such as NAMA or receivership) are in place.
A progress report published last week by Minister of State for Housing Jan O’Sullivan shows 211 estates across the country have been “resolved”. However, of these, just 75 have been “taken in charge”, which means they have been completed to the satisfaction of the local authority.
Some €5 million had been allocated by the department to allow local authorities to address the most urgent safety problems, Minister O’Sullivan said that “hard decisions” may have to be taken in the future in relation to demolition of estates which have no prospect of being completed or occupied.
Two years ago Leitrim had attracted much negative publicity about the number of ghost estates in the county, the latest reports however show Leitrim has just a small problem with unfinished estates (56 are identified) compared to other counties such as Roscommon with 235 problem estates unresolved and Sligo’s 237 unfinished estates.
