Local councillor, Frank Dolan, has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly at their AGM on Friday, July 6.
Cllr Dolan was first elected to Leitrim County Council in 1999 and has been a member of the BMW Regional Assembly and the West Regional Authority since 2009. Cllr Dara Mulvey from Coolaney was elected Leas Cathaoirleach.
The Fine Gael councillor said he was both honoured and privileged to be elected Cathaoirleach of the Assembly. He said there was now a great need for an economic stimulus for the BMW Region and that diversification of the regional economy into areas such as tourism and renewable energy should be promoted. He stated that the Government should take account of the need for balanced regional development in the years ahead.
Cllr Dolan thanked the members for their unanimous support and acknowledged the work of outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Cyril Burke and Leas Cathaoirleach Councillor James Deegan.
