Last Friday week, I was invited by my former National School, St Patrick’s in Drumshanbo, to come back to the School to hoist their second Green Flag. Green Schools, internationally known as Eco Schools – is an international environmental programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long term, whole school action for the environment.
Unlike a once-off project, it is a long term programme which introduces students, teachers and parents to the concept of an environmental management system. One of the key success factors of the green school programme is that it is a themed programme with each of the programmes taking two years to complete. With the first flag awarded for litter and waste, the second flag for energy, the third flag for water, the fourth flag for travel and fifth for biodiversity.
They say school days are your best days…. On my arrival back to my primary school where I started my education many years ago, memories started flooding back to me of kicking ball in the schoolyard, winning my first ever cassette tape in the school raffle, and of queueing up outside the school to buy a new copybook, pencil pearer and rubber.
On Friday morning, I was met in the schoolyard by the caretaker, Andrew, and my former fifth class teacher, Mr Doyle, who is now the school’s headmaster. I have always looked up to Mr Doyle as he was my first ever male teacher and my first ever football coach with the school, and also with the local Gaa Club, Allen Gaels, at Under 12.
On conversing with the children and staff of St. Patricks, I learned what the school had to do in order to achieve its second green flag. The school had upgraded its classrooms to a solar lighting and heating system as part of its energy-saving measures. Every class had to do a project on energy saving; students had to make sure to conserve energy while in school, which included powering down the lights and switching off computers when not in use. Students were asked to continue such measures in their homes. The Green Flag was awarded to the school by An Taisce and Leitrim County Council.
As I hoisted the flag, I felt honoured and proud of my native primary school. I was so impressed with the children and teachers and the reception they greeted me with and I would like to acknowledge the very hard work, effort and commitment by all involved including teachers, students and parents in being awarded the school’s second green flag. I wrote this article this week to specially mention each and every child in St. Patrick’s National School, to say congratulations and well done on an amazing achievement….
