The HSE has announced that work on a new Primary Care Centre and Care Managed Unit in Ballinamore is due to commence next month (July). This development will involve the building of a modern purpose built Primary Care Centre and interconnected 20 bed Care Managed Unit which will also include a Day Service facility.
The commissioning of the building is planned for September 2014, and the total cost is €5.9million. Architects for the project are Reddy Architects.
The Primary Care Centre (PCC) will provide accommodation for members of the South Leitrim Primary Care Team, including GPs, Public Health Nurses, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Chiropody and dental healthcare facilities. Multi-disciplinary bookable clinic rooms for visiting professionals including Dietician, Speech and Language Therapist, Psychologist and Community Mental Health Services will also be available in the centre.
The Care Managed Unit (CMU) with 20 beds has been designed in accordance with the HSE’s ‘Teaghlach’ Model which promotes the principles of privacy and autonomy for the older person and prioritises the need for supporting and strengthening ties between residents and family, friends and local communities.
According to Cara O’ Neill, General Manager for HSE West, Community Services, Sligo/Leitrim and West Cavan ‘This is an exciting and much needed new development for the people of Ballinamore and surrounding area and we are delighted to progress this new Primary Care Centre and Care Managed Unit/Day Care facility.’
Three wings of accommodation wrap around a south facing landscaped courtyard. Corridors have been designed as ‘streets’, bedroom doors designed as ‘front doors’ and social spaces have been scattered throughout the plan in an effort to de-institutionalise the facility. Residents will be accommodated in single bedrooms with en-suites.
The arrangement of the plan maximises daylight into rooms and circulation areas whilst affording the required level of privacy to visitors and residents. A striking feature of the building is the incorporation of roof lights which help to break up the roofline and allow daylight to penetrate into the centre of the plan.
The development in Ballinamore is one of the projects of ongoing capital development for modern Primary Care Centres in Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan.
