Retired National School principal, Damian Brennan, has been elected as Chairperson of the Leitrim/Sligo/Mayo Education and Training Board.
At the monthly meeting in the Bush Hotel last week, Mr Brennan was nominated unopposed to the position.
Sligo councillor, Joe Queenan was also elected unopposed to the position of Vice Chairperson.
They are replacing outgoing Chairperson, Cllr Jarlath Munnelly, Mayo and Vice Chairperson, Leitrim County Councillor, Mary Bohan.
Mr Brennan thanked his proposed and seconder and said he was delighted and honoured to be elected to the position of Chairperson.
He also paid tribute to outgoing Chairperson, and Vice Chairperson, Cllr Mary Bohan for their excellent service.
In one of his first duties as chairperson, Mr Brennan made a special presentation to former Leitrim Development Company CEO, Tom Lavin, for his service to education in the county over the last 17 years.
He praised Mr Lavin for his enthusiasm and energy during his term as CEO and said that he had played a vital role in the development of adult education services in particular in Co Leitrim.
“For Tom this work has been much more than a job. It has been more of a vocation,” said Mr Brennan.
“Tom is a man of vision and a man with an enormous capacity for hard work and he’s an eternal optimist, the word ‘“no” is not in his vocabulary,” he added.
