A committee working on a proposal to have a monument erected to the memory of Jimmy Gralton in Effernagh, hope to have the project completed by August this year.
The plan is to put in place the monument on the site of the old hall at Effernagh, just outside Carrick-on-Shannon.
Gralton’s story came to international attention last year following the production and screening of a film by renowned director, Ken Loach. A committed socialist, Gralton built a dance hall in Effernagh in the 1930’s.
The hall was burned to the ground in an arson attack in 1932 and Gralton was deported soon after. He remains the only Irish national to be deported from this country and Leitrim’s County Councillors recently supported a call for a State apology for this action.
