Leitrim County Council will revisit plans for a bus shelter in Tullaghan after a 2023 proposal was shelved following major local objections.

A bus shelter is being sought for a North Leitrim village, two years after a previous proposal was shelved following major objections.

Cllr James Gilmartin brought a motion to the July meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, calling on the Council's Active Travel section to install a bus shelter at the existing Local Link bus stop in Tullaghan.

“Given the regular use of this service by residents, schoolchildren, older persons and visitors, a shelter would provide essential protection from adverse weather conditions and improve comfort, accessibility and safety for passengers waiting for public transport,” stated Cllr Gilmartin’s motion.

The motion also requested that the location be assessed as a priority.

In a response, the Roads department said the Council's Active Travel section had sought to install a bus shelter in Tullaghan in 2023, but the proposal was met with “major objections” from the local community.

“We can revisit this proposal once resources allow,” the response concluded.

Cllr Gilmartin said he had been unaware of the objections raised in 2023 and asked if it could be established why people had opposed the proposal.

It was agreed that the Active Travel section would be asked to clarify what the issues were at the time, while also providing answers to other questions relating to bus stop shelters across the county.
