Leitrim voluntary group commended for ‘significant effort’ in wind farm campaign

Councillors praised the research, engagement and months of work carried out by the Save Dough Mountain group.
A local voluntary group has been acknowledged and commended by councillors of Manorhamilton Municipal District for their “significant effort” in supporting the community.
At a meeting on Monday, July 20, Cllr Eddie Mitchell put forward a motion that the Municipal District acknowledge and commend the work carried out by the Save Dough Mountain campaign in helping the local community understand, examine and respond to the proposed Lissinagroagh Wind Farm Development.
The motion further asked that the MD recognise the “significant voluntary effort, research and public engagement involved, and notes that this work helped ensure that no stone was left unturned in preparing a detailed and in-depth community response to the proposed development.”
Save Dough Mountain has led the campaign opposing a proposed development on Dough Mountain, which comprises plans by FuturEnergy Ireland, a joint venture between Coillte and the ESB, to erect 14 wind turbines, each approximately 180 metres high.
The group successfully raised more than €7,000 to submit an objection to An Coimisiún Pleanála before the July 10 deadline.
“There was a huge effort made by the community to engage and an awful lot of work done. They’re due a lot of credit, it is a significant voluntary effort,” said Cllr Mitchell. “They’ve had meetings for months and are a credit to us,” he added. All members of the Manorhamilton Municipal District supported the motion.
