Councillors heard a child was nearly hit by a speeding car in Dromahair as renewed calls were made for additional traffic calming measures in the village.

A recent meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District heard that a child was nearly knocked down by a speeding car in Dromahair, as calls were made for additional traffic calming measures in the village.

At July’s meeting, Cllr Mary Bohan asked for an update on the current position regarding traffic calming measures in Dromahair.

“Some of this is down to driver behaviour and there’s not a lot we can do, it’s a matter for the Gardaí,” said Cllr Bohan, adding that people are “concerned.”

“One family brought to my attention a child that was nearly knocked down with traffic speeding through the village,” she said.

The Roads Department confirmed that a number of traffic calming measures have been installed in Dromahair over the past number of years and that there are no further plans for additional traffic calming.

District engineer Paul McMahon noted that any further traffic calming measures in the centre of the village would reduce the number of parking spaces.

The response further noted that the new urban speed limits will be brought before elected members later this year, with a 30km/h speed limit proposed for Dromahair Main Street and the schools within the village.

Cllr Bohan appealed to drivers passing through villages to slow down.

“There’s not much time difference in keeping to the speed limit and breaking it for the length of a couple hundred metres. Consideration should be given,” she said.

Cllr Bohan’s motion was seconded by Cllr Gilmartin, who added that it is “a massive concern.”
