Pedestrian crossing and safety works confirmed for busy street in North Leitrim

Pedestrian works will be carried out at a busy spot in Manorhamilton next year, a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District has heard.

Cllr James Gilmartin proposed a motion seeking that the Council explore installing a pedestrian crossing or other suitable traffic safety measures on Park Road, between the Bee Park and the Community Centre.

“There is a significant volume of pedestrian movement between these locations, particularly during underage sporting activities and the weekly farmer’s market, creating potential safety concerns for children and other pedestrians,” stated his motion.

Senior engineer for Manorhamilton MD, Paul McMahon, confirmed that works will take place next year on Park Road, including a pedestrian crossing and pedestrian infrastructure, as part of the Active Travel program.

Proposing another motion about road safety, Cllr Gilmartin also asked that public lighting be installed at Diffreen Community Centre, around the N16 and L4138 junction.

“During the winter months it’s extremely dark there,” said Cllr Gilmartin, also noting the large volume of traffic in that location daily.

“Any improvement from a safety perspective would be widely welcomed by local residents and visitors alike,” read his motion.

Because it is a national road, the Council must ask Transport Infrastructure Ireland if they can provide the lighting. It was agreed that these representations will be made.
