Delays leave commuters in North Leitrim standing in cold without bus shelter, meeting hears

Three bus shelters in the Manorhamilton area are expected to be tendered next year amid calls for their fast delivery.

Cllr Felim Gurn asked for an update regarding three bus shelters in the town: one at Our Lady’s Hospital, another at St Clare’s National School, and a third at Clancy’s in Glenfarne.

“With winter season now and people standing out in the cold and rain, it is unacceptable that these bus shelters have not been delivered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII),” stated Cllr Gurn’s motion at a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District.

Cllr Mary Bohan seconded the motion, adding that the shelters are necessary for the number of people availing of bus services.

“They’re very well used and the local link is an absolute necessity now. To have the shelters is a no brainer,” she said.

Further, Cllr Gurn noted that the shelters should already be in place when people are being encouraged to use public transport.

Senior engineer Paul McMahon confirmed that the Manorhamilton bus stops are under the Safe Routes to School Scheme, which is to be tendered early next year.

The bus shelter for Glenfarne falls under the TII safety works scheme, which still has to go to tender.
