Number of pupils in Leitrim has increased by 44 to 6,295

The average post-primary school size in Leitrim is 367, below the national average of 503

Preliminary enrolment numbers in primary and post-primary schools in Leitrim show 0.7 per cent increase between September 2017 and September 2018.

The total number of pupils enrolled for the 2018/2019 school year in both primary and post-primary schools in Leitrim rose to 6,295, an increase of 44.  This figure remains unchanged from September 2017. This compares with an increase of 0.8 per cent across the State generally.

The Department of Education and Skills has published initial results on enrolments by local administrative area for September 2018 in primary and post-primary schools across Ireland. The data provides information on increases and decreases in school enrolments across the country, changes in the numbers attending schools of different ethos, as well as average school sizes.

The figures demonstrate changes in the numbers of children attending schools of different ethos:

· Total enrolments in Catholic primary schools in Leitrim stood at 3,645 in September 2018, representing 97.8 per cent of all pupils

·  Church of Ireland schools had enrolments of 82, representing 2.2 per cent of all pupils.

Overall in Leitrim more primary schools gained than lost pupils, with 5 schools seeing an increase of 5 or more pupils, compared with 4 schools that saw a decrease of 5 or more.

Small schools remain a distinctive feature of the primary education system, with 708 schools having 60 or fewer pupils enrolled for the 2018/2019 school year. These schools accounted for 22.8 per cent of all schools yet represented just 4.4 per cent of the total enrolments.

The report shows that Leitrim had a higher proportion of small schools than average, with 51.4 per cent of schools having 60 pupils or fewer and with 18.9 per cent of pupils attending such schools. It also shows that the average primary school size in Leitrim is 101 pupils, below the national average of 180 pupils.

Post-Primary Level 

At post-primary level, 2,568 pupils were enrolled in Leitrim schools in September 2018 – an increase of 44 pupils, or 1.7 per cent, on September 2017.

Overall, more post-primary schools gained than lost pupils, with 5 schools seeing an increase of 5 or more pupils, no school saw a decrease of 5 or more pupils.

The report showed that the average post-primary school size in Leitrim is 367, below the national average of 503.

At both primary and secondary level, the number of multi-denominational schools has risen. There is also a move towards larger schools in our post-primary system as enrolments increase each year.
