The van in the flooded River Bonet during Storm Dudley last week
Thanks to the quick-thinking actions of Cillian Murphy of Inland Fisheries Ireland, two members of the public were rescued by emergency services from their van during Storm Dudley in Leitrim last week (February 16).
The driver was attempting to cross over the River Bonet at Daisie’s Ford, when it had been swept downstream. Cillian, a Fisheries Officer in the Sligo District, was on a routine patrol in the area and spotted the van, which was facing upstream in fast-moving water, with levels up to the bonnet.
As the first person on the scene, he liaised with emergency services and the driver of the van ensuring that An Garda Síochana and the Fire Service and Ambulance Service arrived as quickly as possible to their exact location.
Thankfully, the two occupants of the van were brought to safety by the emergency services.
Fisheries Officer, Francis Byrne was also on the scene to offer assistance to emergency services.
