Leitrim town to introduce one-hour parking on pilot basis

One-hour parking signage will be introduced on New Line in Manorhamilton this year as part of a pilot scheme that could later be extended to Main Street.
One-hour parking signage will be installed on New Line in Manorhamilton this year on a pilot basis. If successful, the one-hour parking scheme may also be introduced in other parts of the town, including Main Street.
There will be no traffic warden or paid parking tickets involved.
At July’s meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr Felim Gurn said business owners in the town are growing “frustrated” with cars taking up parking spaces for long periods.
Cllr Gurn said people are “abandoning” their cars, leaving customers unable to find parking near businesses. In a motion, he asked Leitrim County Council to review the possibility of introducing parking boxes on Main Street, saying some motorists are parking in a way that occupies two or three spaces.
He also asked that one-hour parking, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, be approved by members.
In a response, the Roads Department confirmed that the Council intends to install one-hour parking signage and road markings in the parking areas on New Line on a pilot basis.
“Once these are in place, monitored and effectiveness gauged, then a discussion around the review of the parking byelaws on Main Street and Manorhamilton in general would be appropriate,” the response stated.
“Hopefully the one hour spaces will encourage people to come in and do what they have to and then free up for someone else to come along,” said Cllr Gilmartin, who presented a similar motion in March seeking one-hour parking on New Line.
“Hopefully it’s going to be a success on the New Line and can follow onto the Main Street,” he added.
