On 18 March 1923, Dr Paddy Muldoon was shot dead at Bridge Street in Mohill.
He was walking home after his usual Sunday night game of cards. Three men and a local priest were implicated in the murder.
Dr Muldoon's murder happened just as the Civil War was coming to a close. In the months afterwards, it was clear that the IRA, church and major figures in the emerging state all colluded in some way to cover up the murder and protect those involved.
The murder is therefore significant on a national as well as a local level.
100 years to the day, on Saturday, 18 March 2023, Mohill Historical Society will mark the event by tracing Dr Muldoon’s final footsteps: the evening starts at 8:30pm at St Patrick’s Church, and moves down the town towards the site of the murder.
The evening includes talks, a short film re-enacting the murder, and will end with songs and music from Fionnuala Maxwell and the Kellegher family.
Speakers include Dr Patrick McGarty, author of Leitrim: The Irish revolution, 1912-23, and Ken Boyle and Tim Desmond, authors of The Murder of Dr Muldoon.
The organisers are also hoping that people will share the stories and memories they have about the events surrounding the shooting.
