Gardaí will be notified of safety concerns at a dangerous section of the road between Carrick-on-Shannon and Mohill.

Cllr Paddy Farrell requested that the district engineer examine the road at Ussaun and Cornee (L-34481) to identify potential improvements, noting that it is a “dangerous” section. He highlighted that elderly people and schoolchildren frequently walk there, and that an accident has already occurred at the location.

Cllr Maeve Reynolds also submitted a motion raising safety concerns at Ussaun and called for the road to be assessed. She described how a car recently mounted a nine-inch footpath, noting that “luckily no one was on it.”

Her motion also sought a safety assessment at Drumdoo, where there is a concealed entrance and where a fatality has previously occurred. “You’re taking your life in your hand going out with the speed that traffic is going,” said Cllr Reynolds. She asked if there could be driver feedback signs or rumple strips implemented.

A response from the Roads Department explained that the cul-de-sac junction has been examined by the district engineer on several occasions. “We have invested in this junction layout with driver feedback signs, road markings, rumble strips and land has been purchased in the past to improve sight distances,” the response stated.

District Engineer Emma Donohoe confirmed that the rumble strips on the R201 at this approach can be refreshed as they have faded.

The response further noted that the issue lies with the speed of traffic approaching the junction, which has a 50km/h limit. Enforcement is required, and Gardaí will be contacted and advised of speeding at the locations.
