Connacht Fleadh Cheoil 2026 set to bring cultural, social and economic boost to Leitrim

Councillors have welcomed the return of the Connacht Fleadh Cheoil to Mohill this summer, following its last appearance in the town in 2010.

Expected to attract significant footfall and deliver social and economic benefits, Cllr Maeve Reynolds called on Leitrim County Council, at a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, to work with the organisers to provide the necessary support to ensure the successful delivery of an event of this scale.

The Connacht Fleadh Cheoil will take place in Mohill from June 28 to July 5, marking its first visit in 16 years. 

The competitive element of the festival will run from Friday, July 3, to Sunday, July 5, with dancing competitions scheduled for Friday, and all other competitions spread across Saturday and Sunday. 

Attendees can look forward to a full week of cultural events, sessions, concerts, workshops, and community celebrations.

Cllr Reynolds welcomed its return to Mohill, highlighting its significance and noting that it will showcase the work that has been done in the town over the past year. 

She also pointed out that the festival coincides with the weekend following the rowing regatta in Lough Rynn. “It will be 10 days of thousands of people coming to Mohill,” she said.

Other councillors expressed their enthusiasm as well. “It’s a huge event for a town like Mohill,” commented Cllr Stenson.

Cllr Flynn remarked on how Connacht Fleadhs have grown “immeasurably” since 2010, adding that it will require considerable organisation. 

“It will be very exciting times around Mohill and the general area; it brings a lot to the community,” added Cllr Guckian Rabbitte.

Leitrim County Council has pledged its support for the Fleadh. In an official response, the Council noted that the event will provide a major platform to celebrate cultural heritage while also delivering meaningful social and economic benefits for Mohill and the wider region.

The response also highlighted the Council’s strong track record of working collaboratively with festival organisers and events. 

Officials will engage with the Connacht Fleadh organisers, alongside relevant agencies and community stakeholders, to offer support and assistance, including grant aid, preparation, traffic management, and on-site support.
