Motorist detected driving on N4 50kph above speed limit in "torrential" showers

Gardai have confirmed that a motorist was detected driving 50kph above the national speed limit on the N4 in Co Leitrim in conditions that were described as "extremely wet with torrential showers."

The motorist was detected driving at 110kph in a 60kph zone and a fixed charged penalty notice and a €80 fine has been issued. The motorist will also receive penalty points as a result of the offence.

Gardaí are urging motorists to beware of the hazards associated with driving in wet conditions.

In a post in the Sligo/Leitrim Garda Siochana Facebook page motorists are advised that, "Stopping distances increase dramatically in wet conditions. The higher the speed, the wetter the road, the greater the stopping distance."
