Gardaí catch DOZENS of people driving intoxicated in past 24 hours

Gardaí are urging people to stay safe on the roads after detecting vehicles travelling at excessive speeds over the last 24 hours.

According to Gardaí, one fatality occurred during this time (bringing the number of road deaths so far this year to 103), with 55 people detected driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

GoSafe checked 67,437 vehicles for speed in the past 24 hours, with top speeds including 166km/h in 100km/h zone, 163km/h in a 120km/h zone, and 88km/h in a 50km/h zone.

In a statement, Gardai said, "Whatever reason you're using the roads this weekend and whatever your mode of transport may be - we're appealing to you to stay safe on the roads this weekend. We are out helping to keep the roads safe and ask for your support by staying vigilant and avoiding risk."

Motorists are also urged to check lights and tyres regularly.

During a road safety operation yesterday (August 5), Baltinglass Roads Policing Unit and RSA Ireland detected trailers without brake lights and tyres in poor condition.

Meanwhile, Naas Roads Policing Unit carried out a Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoint this morning (August 6) at Jigginstown.

Two motorists were arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

In a statement, Gardaí said, "NEVER drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol."
