Conor McGregor's fighting coach has said that he would "love to have someone" as the President of Ireland like McGregor, saying the Irish UFC fighter would be capable of the job due to his "sharp business mind".

In an interview conducted with LuckyBlock, a cryptocurrency casino website, mixed martial arts coach John Kavanagh commented on McGregor's recent announcement that he would run for president in the upcoming 2025 elections.

The controversial fighter made the announcement online in recent weeks that he would run for president in the 2025 election, saying that he was "the only logical choice" and explaining that "Ireland needs an active President employed wholly by the people of Ireland".

McGregor has previously stoked up anger directed at the Irish government, having posted multiple tweets during the Dublin riots in November.

Kavanagh is a long-time coach of McGregor, having coached him since the beginning of his MMA career, and is the current president of the Irish Mixed Martial Arts Association.

While Kavanagh admitted in the interview that he "didn't know" the roles of the Irish president, but said he would like the idea of McGregor in the job "for some of the simple budgeting stuff".

"He’s got a sharp business mind. There’s a lot of people in politics that study diplomacy and history, and there are a lot of legal minds in politics, but not a lot of business minds," Kavanagh said.

Referencing the government's recent overspend for a bike shed at the Dáil, he explained how MgGregor would have handled the controversy.

"I know if you approached Conor today and said "could we have a few quid there? We’re going to build a bike shed around the corner. How much is it? 300 grand" you’d be fired on the spot. Any businessman would be fired on the spot but I think a lot of these politicians, they kind of come through a different world.

"I just think for some of the practical side of things, to have someone in there, almost like an Elon Musk, just cutting silly costs. I’d love to have someone in there like Conor that could slash a lot of those silly outgoings and then we let the other guys take care of all the diplomas and stuff."

The President of Ireland has little to no jurisdiction on government budget and spending.

Asked if former US president Donald Trump could give McGregor advice, Kavanagh said that the two had something in common, as McGregor "came from the business world and went into the political world".

"I know a few guys who have done similar on a much, much, much smaller scale and they all came back and said the same thing – they just couldn’t believe how much of a snake pit it was and how guarded you must be. And the amount of people trying to put daggers in your back," Kavanagh said.

“This kind of double play that goes on and the trickery and all of that, maybe, Mr. Trump, who has been through that, could kind of tell him just, ‘watch your back.’”
