CSO figures show 39% drop in number of apartments granted planning permission

Planning permissions granted for apartments units fell 52% across the country in late 2024 and house planning permissions dropped by 21%

CSO figures show 39% drop in number of apartments granted planning permission

New data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has revealed that the number of planning permissions approved for apartments dropped by approximately 39% in 2024 in comparison to the previous year.

The figures also show that the number of planning permissions granted for houses had dropped by 2.7% in 2024.

Between 2023 and 2024, the overall figure of new homes approved annually decreased by 21.4% despite the increase of 20.6% in the previous year.

The CSO figures published today, March 12, 2025 show a significant drop of 55.7% in planning approvals for apartments in Dublin across the four local authorities in 2024 when compared with 2023.

There was also a 46% drop in the number of Strategic Housing Development units approved in 2024.
