LIVE: Woman airlifted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in Carlow dog attack

A woman has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after she was attacked by an XL Bully at a domestic residence in Carlow Town.

Gardaí say emergency services attended the property on Tuesday afternoon following reports of a dog attack.

"A woman, aged in her late 50s, has been removed from the scene by air ambulance to the Mater Hospital in Dublin, for treatment of injuries believed to be serious," said a garda spokesperson. 

The services of the local dog warden were requested and gardai say the dog was subsequently euthanised by a vet at the scene.

The dog is believed to be of a restricted breed, namely an XL Bully.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing and gardai say the scene of the attack remains preserved to facilitate technical and forensic examinations.

Since February of this year, XL Bully dogs have been effectively banned in Ireland following the enactment of the Control of Dogs (XL Bully) Regulations 2024.
