NCT issues stark warning after shocking 'sunroof in the underbody' discovery on Irish car

Inspectors say rust can seriously weaken vehicles after "spare wheel was trying to make an escape"

NCT issues stark warning after shocking 'sunroof in the underbody' discovery on Irish car

Irish drivers are being urged to check their cars after NCT inspectors discovered a vehicle with so much corrosion that the spare wheel was almost falling through the underbody.

The National Car Testing Service (NCT) shared footage of the shocking damage on social media this week, warning motorists that corrosion remains one of the most common reasons vehicles fail the test.

Posting alongside a video of the damaged car, the NCT said the vehicle "nearly came with a sunroof… in the underbody".

"A recent vehicle presented for its NCT and had corrosion so bad the spare wheel was trying to make an escape," the post said.

Inspectors warned that rust is far more than just a cosmetic issue and can seriously affect the structural integrity of a vehicle.

"Corrosion is a very common reason for failure, and it's not just cosmetic," the NCT said.

"It can seriously weaken the structure of your vehicle and make it dangerous to drive."

NCT inspectors say even a quick inspection could prevent bigger problems later.

"A quick check today could save you a big repair bill — and keep your spare wheel where it belongs," the organisation added.

Motorists are being encouraged to check their vehicles regularly, particularly older cars, and to deal with rust problems before they worsen and potentially make the vehicle unsafe.
