Leitrim’s young athletes again turned in some great performances with Carrick AC’s Declan Kennedy and Ballinamore’s Matthew Lee claiming gold for the county.
On an extremely hot and competitive day last Saturday in Claremorris, there were a few superb individual performances as well as medals at the Western Region Team competition and U12 & 13 Championships.
Carrick AC’s Declan Kennedy pipped his brother Patrick to the gold medal, Patrick finishing fourth in an extremely close U12 600m and only missing out on a medal by less than three tenths of a second while Ballinamore’s Matthew Lee won gold in the Connacht only U13 walk.
North Leitrim AC’s Dean Williams took silver in the U13 Shot while there were bronze medals for the U11 sprint team of Luke Charles & Aaron McDonagh and Dara Holmes in the U13 Turbo Javelin.
Carrick AC’s Hugh McGovern and Caoimhin O’Sullivan finished third in the U10 60m sprint before then finishing fourth in the 500m with Hugh recording the fastest overall time on the day in the event. Indeed, his 60m time was fourth fastest overall.
Faith Lynott and Keelin Cronin both finished fourth in the Javelin and 60m sprint respectively as did North Leitrim's Karen Mulvaney-Kelly & Lucy Boyle and Carrick AC's Joshua Bosquette & Theo Gately in the U11 turbo javelin.

Attention turns next Saturday to the older age groups with the Connacht U14 to Senior Track & Field in Claremorris. Relays get underway at 10 am with a full programme of events and some Masters events added for the first time.
Dublin Graded Meet
A number of Carrick AC athletes competed at last Wednesday's Dublin Graded League with Alannah McGuinness winning the B 100m in a time of 12.71 while Aisling Gill finished third in her 400m race in a time of 69.46.
Oisín Kearney ran 12.40 over 100m with a plus 0.9 m/s wind behind him while Eoghan Farrell took four seconds off his pb with a time of 4.38.36 over 1,500m. And to complete the evening, Cathal McElgunn ran a new season's best of 52.21 in his 400m race.
