We haven’t even had the County Club Finals for 2018 and already Connacht GAA have issued the 2019 Connacht Club Championship fixtures along with the fixtures for next year’s FBD League and Connacht Minor Football Championship.
Terry Hyland will see his team host Mayo in the opening round of the League which has become a knockout affair for the very first time in the competition’s history following immense difficulties in trying to fit the entire schedule in last year.
Leitrim will have home advantage against Mayo and also against Galway should they advance to the semi-finals on Sunday January 13, with the final scheduled for January 20. It also means that Leitrim will have just one guaranteed preseason game instead of four last year and three all previous years.
The controversial B Final has survived a reorganisation of the Connacht U17 Championship but there is more of an incentive with the news that just one team will automatically go into the Final with the second and third placed teams contesting a semi-final.
Connacht GAA have also revealed that Roscommon will not be granted a deviation along with Galway and Mayo from the rules regarding eligibility for the Connacht Junior Football Championship next year due to their status in Division One of the Allianz NFL.
In this year’s AIB Connacht Club Championships, the Connacht Council confirming dates for this year’s competitions. Whoever lifts the Fenagh Cup next month will face the winners of the Sligo v Mayo preliminary round while in the Intermediate and Junior, Leitrim clubs will face a preliminary round game against Sligo opposition on Saturday, November 3.
In the Connacht Junior Hurling, the new Leitrim champions will have a home game against the Sligo winners on the October Bank Holiday Monday with the winners facing the Galway champions in the Connacht Final the following Saturday.
The draws were also made for the 2019 Connacht Club Championships with whoever wins the 2019 Senior Championship title facing Mayo in the first round.
