Leitrim Youth Olympic bronze medalist Déarbhla Rooney contacted the Leitrim Observer asking for a little space to say thanks for the support she has received during an amazing year for the Grenade from Glenade.

The following are Déarbhla’s own words:

“Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina what an amazing experience! Proud to represent my country and to bring a European Silver and an Olympic bronze medal back to Leitrim; it's been an incredible and emotional year going from the all Irelands in the National stadium Dublin to the Europeans in Italy to the world championships in Hungary and finally the Youth Olympic Games!

“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey especially my coach Dmitri and everyone at the High Performance centre in Dublin to my club coaches and to all my family, friends and neighbours, to Glencar Manor GAA and the whole community who gave me an amazing homecoming, and to Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher GAA for a lovely welcome at their recent fundraising event, thank you.

“I want to say a big thanks to everyone that supported the recent Sean McDermott boxing club fundraiser and all the local businesses that contributed so generously and a special thanks to Bart Cunningham of Oriel Attachments for sponsoring me on my trip to the Olympics.

“I want to thank the Leitrim Observer and Ocean FM for their support and coverage throughout this journey. I am very grateful to Team Ireland for the fantastic trip and for selecting me as the flag bearer for the closing ceremony.

“I have to thank the Olympic Federation of Ireland for their professional support and finally to my teammates for making every second memorable” - Dearbhla Rooney
