Leitrim claim clean sweep at Inter-county championships

What a day for Leitrim pool last Sunday in Drogheda as Leitrim claimed All-Ireland titles in both the A & B competitions at the All-Ireland Inter-County Knockout Cup.

Leitrim defeated Tyrone in the A Final to claim the title for the second time in three years as the five man team of Gavin Donnelly, Wayne Kilmartin, Kevin McWeeney, Jamie Gaffney & Lee McSharry beat Wexford and Tyrone to lift the title.

In the final itself, Leitrim actually went 5-1 down but then reeled off 12 of the next 13 frames to win 13-5.

The B team of John Casey, Dave Flynn, Daragh McQuaid, Hugh Kielty, Keith Conlon, Darren Philips, Richie Shanley, Dave McWeeney, Paddy Brady, Barry Singleton and Oisin O’Connor had a tough test from Fermanagh A in the semi-final, winning 14-10.

In the final, Leitrim faced Wexford B and led 10-8 going into the final session. Wexford quickly levelled and it was tit for tat all the way to 13-13 until Dave Flynn led a jubilant B team to the title and a clean sweep for Leitrim.

It all adds to the success of Drumshanbo’s Maurice Cullen who was a member of the Irish team who struck gold at the European Championships in Killarney recently.

Leitrim Pool had six players on various Irish teams over the weekend with all the teams reaching the semi-finals but it was Maurice who tasted glory as the Irish D team defeated French C team to win the Men’s C championship title.

The C Championship saw Leitrim players on both Irish teams with Colin Crossan and Wayne Kilmartin, Wayne also topping the individual statistics in the C championship with 28 wins from 34 frames.

In the U23 section, Jamie Gaffney & Lee McSharry were on the Irish team that finished second overall while Jamie also reached the last 16 of the singles where he lost to a French opponent.

In the Men’s B section, Gavin Donnelly finished joint second in the individual standings with 17 wins from 24 frames.

Well done also to Maurice Sheehan who was part of the Irish Over 50s team who were crowned champions, beating England 8.5 in the final.
