As a 70 year old I am engaged for the very first time in a social campaign. I am concerned about the ‘shale gas project’. To be branded by the name calling of all opponents, is no more helpful than the stupid late night phone calling by some who share my values on this issue.
It is interesting to me that so many of those supporting this short term goal – the exploitation in one generation of what has taken Nature millions of years to bequeath – seem to have a personal commercial perspective in life.
Hydraulic fracturing as now practised is a new and developing process, not the 60 year old one some present it to be. I would ask Leitrim people to simply defer this ‘project’ until we all know the full, long-term social and economic costs.
