Rinn-Shannon & District Angling Club was founded over ten years ago by a small group of committed anglers who all shared a vision of promoting the fantastic angling product that the south Leitrim area naturally possesses.

The Mohill hinterland is dotted with numerous lakes, rivers and canals which all hold a fantastic stock of coarse fish. It is no coincidence that the world-renowned “King Of Clubs” competition is held in the area on an almost annual basis and if coarse angling is your preference then this region has to be one of Irelands top destinations. However, if you are a trout angler and your preference is to throw a fly, then your options were somewhat limited.
It was with this in mind that this small group of committed anglers decided to research the idea of creating a trout-angling venue, which would help fill the void and enhance angling choice and diversity. Various lakes were scientifically tested for their suitability as a habitat for the introduction of brown trout and “Lough Rowan” ticked all the boxes in terms of a sustainable trout fishery. With the assistance of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) over 3000 brown trout were released into the lake. Approximately 1000 of these were “Fingerlings” with the rest being between 1yr and 2yr+. Since then we have annually restocked the lake and this has proved to be a tremendous success. This year was no exception and the club successfully introduced 3000 rainbow trout into the lake. Among those 3000 are two 16lb ex brood stock (see photograph) which have been tagged and the first two anglers who catch these leviathans and can prove with a photograph that the fish were released alive shall win free annual membership for the 2015 season!
The 2014 membership card has been redesigned and contains photographic identification. This was introduced as a security measure that no doubt all members will welcome. All members are entitled and urged to request to see that all anglers fishing on the lake are card-carrying club members. It is imperative that if requesting to view another anglers membership card, that it is done in a mannerly and non-aggressive fashion. The rules of the club are printed on the new card and any abuse of these rules may lead to suspension and or dismissal from the club. The club has six Court appointed “Water Keepers” who patrol the lake on a daily basis to ensure that the rules of the club are upheld. To view the powers of a Water keeper please visit www.irishstatutebook.ie/1959/en/act/pub/0014/sec0292.html
For further information and to download a membership application form, log into www.rinnshannon.com, alternatively you can “Follow” us on twitter on @RSDAC or if you prefer the more traditional method, keep purchasing Leitrim’s only local newspaper in which I endeavor to detail all the piscatorial happenings from the locality. If you would like to send photographs of your catches for publication please email them to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. All that’s left to say is, please make sure you respect the water, wear your lifejacket if out on the water and the best of luck in the new season.
Until next time ..tight lines!
