Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald
Martin Kenny is delighted tobe welcoming his party's deputy president to Sligo on December 9 this year.
Deputy Kenny said,"Mary Lou McDonald will be hosting a conference on dual diagnosis, in Sligo in early December.
"Dual Diagnosis is the term used when a person suffers from both a substance abuse problem and another mental health issue such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
"In general, mental health services and addiction treatment centres in Ireland do not treat people holistically. If an alcoholic's addiction arises from mental health issues that person will not be treated for those mental health issues until their alcoholism has been addressed.
"On presentation to a mental health centre it can be the case that they will be turned away until their alcoholism has been dealt with. Crucially for the first time the HSE will be appointing a medical person responsible for Dual Diagnosis.
"I am looking forward to welcoming Mary Lou McDonald TD, who is Sinn Féin’s spokeswoman on mental health, to our constituency and would encourage those dealing with dual diagnosis in their families and professionals in the field to join us at the Riverside Hotel, Sligo, Friday 9 December 2016 from 10am to 1pm."
