Appalled at filth on streets

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

I was appalled and disgusted by the filth and dirt on the streets of Carrick-on Shannon last Thursday morning at 8.30. I was told, albeit anecdotally, that the Leaving Cert students celebrating their results the previous night were responsible. What a way to celebrate! They, and anyone else for that matter who drop litter have learned nothing- either at home or at school about civic spirit, respect and pride of place.

The vast bulk of the litter strewn on Bridge Street and the Quay road consisted of take-away rubbish, broken glass and cigarette butts. The business people who are making profit ought to be embarrassed and ashamed by the state of the street outside of their premises in the early morning. Of course these people are not opening their businesses bright and early the next morning to see the aftermath of the night before. But sure there’s no need to clean up anyway, won’t the Council workers and the Tidy Towns volunteers do it! How disheartened these good people must feel.

So come on business people, do the decent thing and take responsibility for your pub and take-away frontages. Tidy up please at close of business (especially at weekends and when there is a larger than average crowd in town)and prove that you are worthy of patronage.
