IN PICTURES: Leitrim couple celebrate their sapphire wedding anniversary

Billy and Peggie Beirne of Derrywillow, Dromod quietly celebrated their 65th sapphire wedding anniversary recently on Monday 17th March.

They met as most couples in those days at a dance and were married in Bayswater, London on St Patrick’s Day 1960. 

This was the only day during Lent that weddings were conducted by the Catholic Church. Billy was born in Derrywillow and Peggie is a native of Bird Hill Co Tipperary. 

They returned from London in 1973 with their 3 children and made Derrywillow in They returned from London in 1973 with their 3 children and made Derrywillow in Leitrim their home. their home.

What they didn’t know recently was that a surprise party had been organised for Sat 22nd March by their three children Pat, Bernadette and Anthony in The Brandywell in Dromod. 

Over 100 family and friends were there to surprise the happy couple and help them celebrate the wonderful occasion and enjoyed a 3 course sit down meal. 

Quite a few of their close family traveled from the UK and even though there was chaos on Friday due to the Heathrow fire - all finally made it over. 

The celebrations continued on Sunday evening at Cox’s in Dromod. 

A surprise gift on the evening was a letter of congratulations and best wishes from President Michael D Higgins.
