RIP: Fond tributes remember Leitrim man who ‘always had time for a chat’

The Drumshanbo community is fondly remembering a “true gentleman” following the passing of Padraig Conlon on Wednesday, February 25.

Padraig Conlon of Aughaguinea, Drumshanbo, passed away peacefully in the exceptional care of the staff of Surgical North Ward, Sligo University Hospital, and the North West Hospice.

Predeceased by his brother John, Padraig will be deeply missed by his devoted wife Mary (née Grogan); his sons Gerard, Martin and Paul; daughters-in-law Nuala, Deirdre and Eilish; and his cherished grandchildren, Aaron and Killian. He is also sadly mourned by his sister Maura, sister-in-law, extended family, neighbours and many friends.

Condolences shared on RIP.ie reflect the high esteem in which Padraig was held. “He was a true gentleman who always had time for a chat. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” one tribute read. Another recalled, “I was privileged to visit his homestead and admire the scenic view as he filled me in on the history and geography of the surrounding area.”

Others remembered his kindness through his work: “Padraig transported more groceries and bottles of gas to our house than would keep a sizable army going! Always pleasant, personable and professional. What a sincere and gentle soul.”

Padraig will repose at his son Martin’s home on Saturday, February 28, from 4pm to 8pm. Removal will take place on Sunday, March 1, for Requiem Mass at 2pm in St Brigid’s Church, followed by burial in Drumcong.

Many tributes highlighted his character. “He was such a true and loyal friend for many years and it was my privilege to have known him, had many interesting discussions and I sought his advice often,” one person shared.

Padraig is also warmly remembered for his years as a delivery driver. “I remember Padraig as a lovely, friendly and respectful gentleman as he made deliveries in the little blue truck around Drumshanbo and the surrounding countryside,” one tribute noted.
