Liam McNamee in action for Carrick RFC
Carrick-on-Shannon Rugby Club can add another international to it’s ranks of players but this time with a twist as Liam McNamee has been named on the Spain squad that will take part in the World U20 Rugby Cup in Italy.
Qualifying under the parentage rule, the Sligo Grammar School student has been training with the Spanish squad in recent weeks and his efforts have been successful as the Lock was named in the final 30 man squad for the championships.
Born in Valencia but living in Leitrim Village, his father is Donal McNamee of Archway Products in Jamestown and Liam is currently studying Financial Maths and Economics in University of Galway.
With the competition running from June 29, to July 19, Liam and his Spanish teammates will first take on France on Sunday June 29, in the Payanini Center, Verona before facing Argentina on Thursday July 4, in Rovigo’s Battaglini Stadium before concluding with a final group stage match against Wales on Wednesday July 9, in Verona.
The Semi-Finals and Finals will be played between July 14 & 19. Ireland have been drawn in Pool C alongside New Zealand, Georgia and hosts Italy.
Liam has had a fantastic run in recent times culminating most recently in his selection for the Connacht Junior Men's Squad for the Junior Interprovincial Series last month.
