Small hands, big impact: Leitrim primary school wins Nature Hero award

Gaelscoil Liatroma in Carrick-on-Shannon has been recognised with a Nature Hero Award for its outstanding work in biodiversity and environmental education.

Coordinated by Biodiversity in Schools and sponsored by Glenveagh, the Nature Hero Awards attracted registrations from 316 schools across Ireland, representing over 93,000 students. The initiative supports schools in becoming active stewards of their local environment, enhancing biodiversity while nurturing the next generation of nature heroes.

To celebrate their achievement, Gaelscoil Liatroma received a certificate marking a year of dedication to environmental awareness and action.

“Ag obair as láimhe a chéile don timpeallacht ó chéimeanna beaga go coiscéim fathaigh,” a dúirt Máire de Bhrúin, Gaelscoil Liatroma.

"Working outside makes learning feel real. We have built habitats, grown plants, created a pollinator garden, released butterflies and helped wildlife,” said Rang a hAon, Gaelscoil Liatroma.

“It’s exciting to know we’re making a difference and winning the Nature Hero award shows that what we do really matters. Is maith linn ag obair sa ghairdín.”

Annette McGarry, Head of Community Engagement at Glenveagh, commented on the partnership: “We’re proud to collaborate with Biodiversity in Schools on this excellent educational initiative, and delighted to see so many schools and children participate this year.

“We congratulate Gaelscoil Liatroma on their fantastic achievement. Biodiversity plays such an important role in every community and we’re incredibly proud to support this brilliant initiative over the last four years.”

Looking ahead to next year’s programme, Mark Nolan, Director of Biodiversity in Schools, said: “We've been amazed by the incredible work undertaken by schools across the country to help their local biodiversity. A massive well done to all the schools who achieved 'Nature Hero' status this year. A special thank you to Glenveagh Homes for their continued support of this great initiative.”

"This recognition as a Nature Hero is a proud moment for our entire school community. Our outdoor work isn’t just about planting trees or building habitats – it’s about nurturing a deeper understanding and respect for the natural world.
