Blackburn star set to represent Republic of Ireland

Sammie Szmodics scored in Blackburn's recent FA Cup victory over Premier League outfit Leicester City.

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Sammie Szmodics could be included in Stephen Kenny's Republic of Ireland squad for this month's international window after he received international clearance, according to the Irish Examiner.

The English-born 27-year-old, who has starred for his club in the English Championship this season, switched international allegiance in 2021 but there has been a delay in the process due to reported administration complications.

Szmodics now has a chance to represent the Boys in Green after receiving his Irish passport and could feature against Latvia or France later this month if called up.

Scottish-born Celtic winger Mikey Johnston has also officially declared for the Republic of Ireland ahead of Kenny naming his squad next week.

Ireland begin their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign against Didier Deschamps' side at the Aviva Stadium on March 27.
