James McGreal, Pharmacy student from Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon
1. Tell us about the highlight of your 1st year at Ulster University?
For me, the highlight of the year was meeting new people over the first couple of weeks of the year.
As someone who comes from Roscommon, I didn’t know many people going to Ulster University which was quite daunting at first, but in hindsight it made my first year here in Ulster all the better.
2. What is unique about Ulster University?
What I found very unique about Ulster University in comparison to other universities that I applied to, was the way in which they treated applicants as if they were students before even gaining a place on the course.
As someone walking into the unknown when applying to Ulster University through UCAS, I found the University team very helpful in my application, especially when it came to the interview process required for pharmacy.
For me, the fact that year one students are guaranteed student accommodation in their first year, speaks volumes of the care and respect Ulster University have for their incoming students.
3. Tell us about your favourite aspects of your course
The best thing about studying pharmacy at Ulster University is the real emphasis that is placed on the patient facing role that a pharmacist plays within communities across the country.
For me, this is very important as being a pharmacist is so much more than knowing the science behind drugs.
In addition to that, I find that all year groups across the course are really tight knit and as a first year with many questions to be answered I found that the help that was given from older year groups on the course was a massive benefit.
4. You played for the Ulster University Freshers Team – how did you find that?
Playing on the Ulster University Freshers Team was definitely one of the highlights of the year for me. As someone who comes from a small club in Roscommon, the opportunity to go North and meet and play with some of the best footballers in Ulster was one I could not turn down.
Similarly to the first day in University, I didn’t know anyone within the dressing room but it wasn’t long before I was best friends with some of those lads which in itself was one of the many memories of the year.
5. Tell us about your favourite aspects of your campus
Here on the Coleraine Campus one of my favourite aspects is the wide range of facilities and clubs we have at hand.
As someone who has a major interest in sport, I found there are so many opportunities to excel in your chosen sport. From GAA to soccer to American football - there is definitely something for everyone on campus.
