Caoimhe Bruen, Rosaleen Parker, and Laura Rogerson from the South Leitrim Special Olympics Club all competed at the recent Special Olympics Connaught regional event hosted in Sligo Riding Centre.
The trio are accomplished riders, having trained with their Club in the Moorlands Equestrian Centre, Drumshanbo for a number of years. After competing in both Equitation and Trail Ride competitions, Rosaleen Parker won two gold medals, Caoimhe Bruen won a silver and bronze and Laura Rogerson won a gold and silver.
In total, 40 athletes from Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Leitrim and Westmeath competed on the day- all having qualified from area competitions last year. A selection of athletes who participated in the regional event will make up the Connaught Equestrian team to compete at the 2014 Special Olympics Ireland Games which will be held in Limerick next year.
Event manager on the day, Lydia Rogers paid particular tribute to all the dedicated volunteers who delivered an outstanding event. “We had a group of experienced volunteers who really stepped up for this event and delivered a professional competition for our athletes. Student volunteers from the Grammar School Transition Year class were also an excellent support for the day’s proceedings.”
Competition manager, Caroline Brennan also thanked Declan McGarry from Sligo Riding Centre for the excellent facilities and competition judges Shirley McDermott and Brid Keegan who travelled from Kildare to adjudicate the event.
