Mohill Mavericks Ladies  finally overcame Sligo All Stars to win last weekend’s Lonleitros Top 4 Finals in thrilling fashion at the  Mohill Topline Community Sports Hub last Sunday.

After finishing second in the league, Mohill were keen to seek retribution which they did with an impressive 61-50 win over the Sligo side in what was a thrilling and end to end encounter. The rafters were lifted in a vibrant and loud Topline Community Hub when the final buzzer sounded and there were scenes of incredible emotion after a hard fought final.

Mohill were hot off the blocks and rattled Sligo with a 19-6 first quarter lead. Caoimhe McGuinness and Odharnaith McGuinness being the top scorers. Aishling Leahy and Chloe Dolan combined were winning all offensive and defensive rebounds. This early lead was vital and Mohill never trailed for the remainder of the game.

The second quarter was more closely contested with Sligo winning that battle 12-13. Mohill seemed to lose their rhythm after half time and Sligo All Stars took advantage and brought the margin down to a single point.

This was as close as Sligo came however and Mohill’s introduction of experienced player Sarah Mulligan seemed to inspire the team along with the reintroduction of a rejuvenated Chloe Dolan. Kiara Keegan, Kate McGuinness and Jasmine Reynolds battled hard putting lots of pressure on Sligo’ ball carriers while Lorraine Butler played her usual role in defence.

There was no room for error and Mohill kept their cool and retained possession in the dying minutes. Sligo had amassed team fouls and Mohill’s last 5 points were from free shots.

The rafters were lifted in a vibrant and loud Topline Community Hub when the final buzzer sounded and there were scenes of incredible emotion after a hard fought final. Caoimhe McGuinness was named most deserving MVP. Caoimhe has had an outstanding league and has been the driving force behind the team this year.
