Mairead McCauley of North Leitrim Athletic Club, who was prominent in Leitrim under age competition some years ago, had her first major success when she put up an impressive performance in winning the first Leitrim Open Womens’ 5K Roadrace in Ballinamore on Sunday.
The event was organised by Ballinamore Athletic Club on behalf of Leitrim Local Sports Partnership and Leitrim County Board AAI. The event was supported by the Irish Sports Council under their “Women in Sport” programme.
Probably because of the very hot conditions prevailing and the fact that a similar race for men was not held in conjunction on this occasion the turnout was not as big as had been hoped for. Non the less competitors from all four provinces and six counties were listed among those who took part. It is planned to rotate venues for the race with Carrick on Shannon listed for next year and Manorhamilton the year after.
Among the participants who came from Leitrim, Fermanagh, Sligo, Roscommon, Longford and Tipperary were Margaret Carr Flynn and Maria Hunter of Ocean FM. The Ballinamore Festival 10K and 5K for both men and women will take place as last year on the evening of Wednesday August 15.

Letirim Darts news
Round seven of the Swan Bar sponsored eight night tourament took place in Jackies of Ballinamore on Sunday last and after some excellent darts, we had another first with Leitrim and Ireland captain Olive McIntyre producing brilliant darts to become our first lady qualifier.
Olive beat Graham McDermott in the final. This was Grahams second final in a row and despite playing to his usual high standard, he had to give way to Olive’s power scoring and clinical finishing. Overall this performance by Olive was one of the most complete of the tourament to date amd she will be one of the favourites in the final.
Next week is last chance saloon for the eighth qualifier which takes place in the aptly named Drumcoura City Saloon bar. It promises to be some shoot out, see ye all there at 8.30 sharp. Thanks to Jackies for their ample refreshments and sponsorship & well done to Helen McDermott on winning our pick a double fundraiser.
Still room for new faces and maybe a return of some not so new faces, Finally we in Leitrim Darts would like to wish Pat O’Toole & family all the best as they move on from the pub trade always a great supporter of Leitrim Darts.
Community Games Quiz for vests
Leitrim Community Games are holding a table quiz at 8.30 on Friday, June 8, in Murtagh’s Basement Bar, Carrick-on-Shannon and are appealing for support from all around the county. The aim of the event is to raise funds to purchase new running vests for the County’s athletes competing in the National Finals in Athlone. Over the last two years, Leitrim have unfortunately being the only county not to have their own vests, forcing athletes to compete in plain white t-shirts or vests that they must provide themselves.
Anyone or any business who would like to contribute to this very worthy fundraising event but is unable to attend on the night can contact Leitrim Community Games Treasurer Mary Keenan at 46 Breffni Crescent, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Any contribution would be very much appreciated.
