Eights teams vying for six spots with just four points between and three derby clashes in the final round of the Smith Monumentals IFC - could we ask for any more drama than what next weekend's final round of group games promises?
All we know for certain is that Annaduff, Allen Gaels and Melvin Gaels are definitely through to the playoffs, where they end up is anybody's guess with two semi-final places still at stake.
We also know that both Drumreilly & Bornacoola are headed for the relegation series but after that, it is all to play for with Kiltubrid, Aughavas, Ballinaglera, Drumkeerin and Carrigallen all in danger of missing out and all with a good chance of making the playoffs. Adding to the drama, Carrigallen & Aughavas and Drumkeerin & Ballinaglera face off in derby matches!
Aughavas celebrate opening of James McGovern Astro Pitch - GALLERY
Sunday August 28, was a very proud day for Aughavas GAA Club with the official opening of the new James McGovern Astro Pitch at the club and Observer photographer Willie Donnellan was there to capture the event ... see who you can spot!
Below we take a brief look at the games:
Kiltubrid v Allen Gaels
A derby with so much at stake - Allen Gaels are one of the favourites for the title, have had a few hiccups but have a scoring power few can match. Kiltubrid gave themselves a huge boost with a win over Drumkeerin and they are dangerous. Hard to call this one but form would suggest a win for the Drumshanbo men.
Carrigallen v Aughavas
Another huge derby and nothing to separate the teams. League form would say Carrigallen but Aughavas missed quite a bit against Annaduff and will feel confident. Just three points between them in the League with Carrigallen winning and they did reach the final. Not really sure who to go for here but I'll give the nod to Carrigallen at home.
Annaduff v Melvin Gaels
The battle for a semi final spot makes this very interesting - both teams have had close shaves so far but Annaduff have shown a knack for winning games where they haven't played well. They are young and light in a few positions but they also boast serious experience. The same could be said of Melvin Gaels and there were only two points between the teams in the League. Another tough one to call but I'll give Annaduff the dreaded nod.
Ballinaglera v Drumkeerin
The loser here could find themselves in a relegation battle so the stakes are huge on that front alone, whatever about local rivalry. Drumkeerin appeared to have better form but a heavy, demoralising loss to Kiltubrid will have hit them hard. Ballinaglera haven't been quite able to get across the line but if they bring their usual fire and drive, they may just edge through - don't rule out a draw though!
Bornacoola v Drumreilly
Interesting to see what both teams do here - both teams may be tempted to rest players for the relegation series where they could end up meeting again. Drumreilly have been scoring slightly more and that may just see them through but bigger battles lie ahead for both clubs.
