The first of three rounds of the Leitrim Darts Super League takes place this Friday night, September 22, with the Breffni League hosting the Lough Allen League in the Blue Devon in Dromahair and Jackie’s in Ballinamore hosting the meeting of the Ballinamore and Mohill Leagues.
At the beginning of the year when the new committee was formed we set out to revitalise and make darts more inclusive in the county & central to this was the formation of the Super League. One problem area identified which was understandable was players reluctance to travel all over the county for several trials so the idea to form the Super league was put in motion, this allowed players to trial in their own areas spread over three trials and final nights.
This increased player participation from a hard core of 20 players competing to make the county team in previous years to approx 80 presently taking part in trials. The playing format is as follows: each league will select their nine top ranked players available on the night, with players receiving county ranking points for winning their individual game.
Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins hit three second half goals to take victory in Sunday's Connacht Gold Leitrim SFC Quarter-Final against Glencar Manorhamilton and Observer photographer Willie Donnellan was in Avant Money Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, snapping pictures of excited fans .... see who you can spot!
These points along with points gained from the Masters, Grand Prix, Matchplay and four Super Sundays will decide the formation of our A & B mens panels.
The committee wishes to thank all the players for buying into this competition making it the success it is so far.
An added bonus is the Super League will give players the experience of playing representative team darts which is very different to individual competition and will help prepare them for the white hot cauldron of the All Irelands & West Coast Challenge.
Finals day will take place in the Barrel Store in Carrick on Shannon on Sunday November 5, looking forward to an exciting competition.
