North Leitrim AC had one of their best ever days of competition on Sunday last at the GloHealth National Juvenile B Cross Country Championships at Dundalk IT.
In a hard fought U13 Girls race, Ella McDaid dug in to earn her first National individual medal, when she finished 11th in the 1,500m race.
Not content with her individual medal, Ella was also the leading scorer on the North Leitrim team which claimed a fantastic gold in the team event with 88 points, just a single point ahead of second placed team, St. Marys (Clare) AC.
The scorers were Ella McDaid 11th, Emily Conlon 20th, Sarah Brady 27th and Lara Mulvaney 30th. The team also comprised Erin Somers 31st, Rachel Conlon 42nd and Niamh Carolan 73rd. There were 95 finishers in the race.
The U13 Girls from Leitrim also won silver in the County Team event with a total of 161 points. The County team was made up of North Leitrim AC runners Ella McDaid, Emily Conlon, Sarah Brady, Lara Mulvaney, Erin Somers and Rachel Conlon. Clare won with 121 pts and Wexford third with 209.
In the U13 Boys race, North Leitrim AC’s Evan Broughton was really unlucky to finish just outside the medal positions, in 13th place. Despite a terrific race, where Evan was in the first five for a good part of the race, he just couldn’t hold on to his position and in the latter stages of the race he dropped a few more places to finish in an agonisingly 13th place.
This was a really great day from the small North Leitrim AC contingent that made the journey over to Dundalk and one which their coach Tom Kelly can be extremely proud of.
