Leitrim will have to manufacture a new Senior team according to manager Sean Hagan in the wake of last Sunday’s demoralising loss in Newry.
Sean admitted that deep down, pre-match optimism aside, Leitrim always knew they were up against it in Newry - “It is very hard but I suppose it was always an uphill task coming up here to Newry.
“The League table didn’t lie, we met a superior team, more physical strength and conditioned team and they outplayed us.
“Unfortunately we got no luck on the day, we needed the luck to get a couple of goals on the day but we felt that they got two soft enough goals that came from our mistakes and ultimately that killed off the game.
“The second half was always going to be an uphill struggle for us.
“Our plan was to be in the game at halftime, then analyse it from there and make changes. We felt that we might have fresh legs on the bench that would make the difference but the game was over at halftime.”
Despite the horror of a 21 point loss, Sean sees plenty of hope for the future - “I suppose we saw two lads come on today at the end of the game and they will be the future of Leitrim football, young lads and really committed to the Leitrim jersey.
“They are going to be the future and there probably will be a lot of changes, a new team will have to be manufactured going forward.
“I think if you look at the Minor team that came through this year and the U21 team, Leitrim’s future looks bright enough and they have to build on that. We have to look around for young blood and keep the flag flying.”
