Do you want to up skill yourself, your staff, teachers, coaches, volunteers on how to include people with a disability in your sports, recreation or physical education sessions? If yes the Leitrim Sports Partnership will be hosting a Disability Inclusion Training (DIT) Course on Saturday, December 8 from 9.30-3.30pm in Leitrim Gaels Community Facility.
This six hour course is designed to give coaches, volunteers, development officers etc. the ideas and inspiration to adapt their sessions to make them more accessible for participants with a disability. It is a theory and practical course that covers terminology, barriers to participation, legislation and guidance and an introduction to disability sports and ways of adapting activities to make them inclusive.
“People with Disabilities want to participate in sports and physical activity for all the same reasons as those who do not have a disability” says Declan Boyle, Sports Coordinator,Leitrim Sports Partnership “However getting an opportunity and having an interest often depend on getting a positive early experience of sport and physical activity. International research has told us that coaches, group leaders though interested and capable, in general, do not feel very confident in including people with disabilities in their sessions. The main reason for this, they identify as not having practical experience or training in how to facilitate inclusive sports sessions”.
On completion of the course all participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance and a range of course materials.
Places are limited, booking forms available by contacting Declan at firstname.lastname@example.org or 071 9650498.
