Watch: Protesters say Leitrim council housing rent increase is 'very unfair'

Around a dozen Leitrim residents turned up to the actions outside Leitrim County Council Offices on Monday

The protest took place at Leitrim County Council offices in Carrick-on-Shannon, with residents turning up to voice their concern about the rental increases and to ask the county council to speak engage with them.

The price hike is part of a new rent scheme, introduced in September, that affects around 1000 residents in the county living in social housing.

Locals had their rent increased based on the income of those living in the home, with rents rising to 18% of the main earner's income, and 10% of the income other earners living in the property.

Leitrim County Council have said that those suffering financial hardship as a result of the increases can contact the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS).

In a statement, the Council has said it understands that every household has unique circumstances and is committed to working constructively with tenants who may be facing financial difficulties.
