Several schools in Leitrim closed today following snow and freezing temperatures overnight.
A Status Orange weather warning issued by Met Éireann was in effect until 10am this morning, Wednesday, January 8. Another Status Orange warning will take effect from 6pm tonight until 11am on Thursday, January 9.
Among the schools that announced closures are St Clare’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton; Lough Allen College, Drumkeerin; Ballinamore Community School; Drumshanbo Vocational School; Drumlease National School, Dromahair; Carrick-on-Shannon Community School; Gaelscoil Liatroma and Mohill Community College.
Most Local Link services in Leitrim continue to operate, with some exceptions. Route 564 from Ballinamore to Carrick-on-Shannon was cancelled this morning but resumed service at 11am.
Route 567 will not serve Dromahair.
Iarnród Éireann have said all routes are planned to operate, with the Sligo-Dublin line running as usual.
Temperatures remain bitterly cold today, dropping to lows of -1 degrees, with highs of 3 degrees.
The cold snap is expected to ease by Sunday evening, with gradual improvement in temperatures.
