Arctic airflow to hit Ireland weather in days but there's another brutal prediction too

An Arctic airflow looks set to make its way over Ireland next week, bringing with it bitterly cold conditions. This prediction comes despite an unseasonably mild start to November.

Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel gave the update to his social media followers on Thursday.

He said: "Latest model runs continue to hint at the transition towards something distinctly wintry, perhaps unseasonably so, as we progress through the latter stages of next week and into the following weekend, with perhaps even a hint of snow for some over higher ground.

"The transition towards colder conditions is very much attributed to the development of a blocking high pressure situated to our north and later northwest with a cold Arctic airflow expected to develop gradually through the second half of the month.

"Before then we must contend with some heavy falls of rain and localised flooding next week," he added.

Met Éireann is also predicting some harsh weather with their outlook predicting "further spells of rain but sunny spells at times too."

They say there will be "some sunny spells across northern and eastern areas early on Saturday where it should remain largely dry for daylight hours. Cloudier elsewhere with patchy, mainly coastal rain, turning heavier later in the afternoon across southern and western counties. The rain will extend nationwide during the evening hours with freshening southerly winds. Hill, mist and coastal fog developing then too. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.

"Wet and breezy with widespread rain, heavy at times [on Saturday night]. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, in a moderate to fresh southerly wind."

"Beginning cloudy with some scattered falls of rain and drizzle, soon clearing northeastwards [on Sunday]. Mostly dry weather will follow for the rest of the day with sunny spells breaking through. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees, in light to moderate southwesterly winds. Mostly dry and calm overnight but with some mist and fog, mainly across eastern areas. Chilly too with lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees."

For Monday, Met Éireann predict: "Crisp sunshine to begin but with areas of mist and fog across eastern areas. Some uncertainty - while many areas will remain dry with sunny spells, some showery rain may affect south and southeast areas. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees, in light to moderate southeasterly winds.

"Current indications suggest it will be a wet and blustery day [Tuesday]. The rain will be heavy and persistent with spot flooding. Hill, mist and coastal fog too. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees, in brisk south to southeast winds."

Beyond that, the forecast is equally bleak as it will remain "unsettled with a large and complex area low pressure in the nearby Atlantic feeding up further spells of rain or showers."
