An annual celebration of Ireland’s much-loved staple, the potato, will return to Leitrim shortly.
Potato Day takes place each year at the Organic Centre, attracting large crowds and offering free entry to the public.
This year’s event runs on March 1 from 12pm to 4pm and features a full programme of activities.
Visitors can browse a lively craft and food market showcasing locally produced goods, while those planning their growing season will find an extensive national selection of quality seed potatoes available in the centre’s shop.
Expert-led tours and demonstrations will explore potato growing past and present. The Loy Association of Ireland will demonstrate traditional planting methods, while boxty-making rooted in the region will be presented by Paula's Family Kitchen. Head gardener Aaron McGowan will also guide visitors through planting their own potatoes.

The centre said it is delighted to welcome an expanding line-up of speakers, including Angelo Galatolo, Food Scientist at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, who will speak on food waste, food security, and the European ROSETTA project.
John Brennan of Leitrim Organic Farmers and Talamh Beo will discuss their work, including advocacy, food sovereignty, and building resilience in rural and farming communities.
Traditional skills and family activities will also feature, with wool spinning, basket weaving, children’s arts and crafts, and old-style games led by Steffi Otto from “Heritage Crafts Alive”.
Live music on the day will be provided by the Cleary family and Mary T.
Potato-inspired dishes will be served throughout the day at the Grass Roof Café. The Organic Centre has confirmed that Lily, formerly of An Caife Bia-Slainte, will be leading the café for Potato Day.
